Two people died in a collision in Buckingham –

Two people died in a car accident that occurred in the Buckingham sector of Gatineau on Saturday night. Several streets in the area are closed to traffic indefinitely due to the collision.

Avenue de Buckingham between Rue Lamennais and Rue Joseph and Rue Maclaren between Rue Charles and Rue Georges will remain closed indefinitely, the Service de Police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) said in a publication on X ( formerly Twitter).

The collision occurred just before 3 a.m. Sunday morning near the intersection of Buckingham Avenue and Maclaren Street, the SPVG wrote in a news release sent out late morning.

A vehicle left the road, collided with Hydro-Québec poles and caught fire, police said. Unfortunately, when they arrived on scene, police discovered the death of two passengers in the vehicle, the SPVG added.

In the middle of the night, a badly damaged limousine sits on the sidewalk.  Electrical cables, a power pole and rubble lie on the ground.  Ambulances are on site nearby.

The collision occurred just before 3 a.m. Saturday night at the corner of Buckingham Avenue and Maclaren Street in east Gatineau.

This traffic accident caused damage to three power poles and caused a power outage affecting up to just over 1,000 customers in the Buckingham sector, Hydro-Québec confirmed to Radio-Canada.

According to the Info-pannes map on the Hydro-Québec website, power appears to now be restored for the majority of affected customers.

According to the information collected on site, the police arrested the driver, the SPVG said in its press release.

According to the police, investigators are collecting witness statements on site to clarify the circumstances of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing.
