Spanish police are investigating a possible link between two letter bombs sent to Ukraine’s ambassador in Madrid and a defense company that manufactures rocket launchers donated to Kyiv. She confirmed this in a statement yesterday.
While the letter bomb exploded at the embassy and slightly injured an embassy employee, the bomb at the weapons factory was detonated in a controlled manner and caused no damage. The latter is Instalaza, maker of the C90 rocket launcher that Spain is donating to Ukraine.
The government representative in Zaragoza, Rosa Serrano, said in an interview with SER that the two envelopes appeared to have come from the same sender, as the same email address was on the back of both packages. According to Serrano, the two packages came from Ukraine.
After the first incident, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba ordered all Ukrainian embassies abroad to “urgently” beef up security and urged Spain to investigate the attack, according to a ministry spokesman. The Ukrainian government did not respond to a request for comment on the second incident.
Spain’s Supreme Court has opened an investigation into the attack as a possible case of terrorism, a judicial source said.
