Before her first appearance in the MCU, Scarlett Johansson appeared in another superhero film. During filming, she was embarrassed by her outfit.
Bizarre costumes can get stars in trouble on camera. Shortly before her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Scarlett Johansson wore a Nazi uniform for the superhero thriller The Spirit. During filming, she felt extremely uncomfortable in the costume, especially due to her Jewish origins and religion.
Scarlett Johansson felt uncomfortable with the strange costume
In 2008, two years before her first appearance in the MCU in Iron Man 2, Johansson played Silken Floss, the loyal righthand man of the insane Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson), in The Spirit. Like her boss, she stands out because of her extremely bizarre choice of clothing. As Johansson explained to the Australian website Dark Horizons in 2008, the uniform caused her many problems.
“I never thought I would ever wear a swastika armband. It was completely bizarre putting on the uniform for the first time. I thought, ‘My grandfather is rolling over in his grave.'”
As Johansson explains in the interview, she felt particularly uncomfortable in the costume because she is Jewish. In the end, however, she was able to accept the uniform as a reflection of the film’s exaggerated visuals.
