The Sixers have a third star named Tyris Maxi.
Thanks to a second-year electric performance guard, the Sixers overcame a brutal start and defeated the Cavaliers 125-119 at the Wells Fargo Center on Friday night. The victory improved the team to 4-0 in the era of James Harden and a total of 39-23. They will be in South Beach tomorrow to face Heath, who is two games behind the first in the East.
Here are some excerpts from a fun evening at The Center.
First quarter
- Quite a disastrous defensive start for the Sixers. The Cavs made their first nine shots – and then bounced off their first two misses before scoring again. Cleveland’s credit for running their kits and for their amazing looks, but it lacked the intensity of the defense.
- The offense was not much better as the Cavs went into the zone and the Sixers did what they normally do against the zone.
- Furkan Korkmaz and Paul Milsap are still in rotation. I have no answers for you.
- James Harden with a personal 6-0 series (and-one drive and three steps back) or that thing would really get out of hand.
- Well, this quarter couldn’t have been any worse. The Cavs shot 73.9 percent of the field and got what the hell they wanted. The Sixers were actually decent in attack, but the defense was a huge problem as Cleveland took the quarter 43-30.
Second trimester
- Hmm. Harden takes their third foul. Not the perfect time with the Sixers, 50-34, less than four minutes after the second quarter.
- When it rains, pour:
The host of the Sixers in the arena simply incorrectly said that it was Tyree Maxi’s birthday, when in fact it was Matisse Tiboul. Here tonight, literally everything went wrong.

- Shake Milton scored his first three after returning to the squad, one and a half floating and a short fading jumper. He reaches eight points. He only plays because Harden had foul problems. Why Doc returned to Korkmaz after playing Milton over him that night is not clear to me. Both are flawed players, but Milton seems to be the better choice right now.
- It always amuses me when Doc goes into the zone, as if other NBA teams are fighting it as much as his.
- I guess I have to eat a little of my words here, because the area actually works. The Sixers reduced the lead to nine after laying Tyrese Maxey. I can’t imagine that the Sixers could have played much worse to start this game, but in fact they are still in it.
- Stormy activity at the end of the first half. Joel Embiid made an absolute circus shot and-one to make 69-61 with 7.2 seconds left.
A cheap foul against Matisse Thybulle gave Kevin Love two free throws and gave Cavs 71-61 with 4.5 seconds left. Then Tyrese Maxey flew down the floor to take a three-pointer at the last second and was fouled with the remaining 0.4. He made 2 of 3 to make 71-63 in favor of the Cavs, who entered the locker room. Honestly, the Sixers should feel happy that they dropped out with only eight. Their attack was actually good overall – including Tobias Harris, who had 13 points from the first half – but Cleveland shot 61.9 percent overall and 53.8 out of three. Adjustments need to be made.
Third quarter
- Rivers withdrew from Thybulle in the first half with the Cavs zone, but chose to start it in the second half.
- Sixers returned to the man and the intensity definitely increased. Tibul is really chasing Darius Garland. The violation is also a click with Harden’s return. The Sixers are somehow within three, 73-70.
- Embid and Tibul with four fouls each and Harden with three. We’ll see if it’s a factor.
- Maxey was outstanding here in the third. He already has up to 10 points in the period and 19 for the match. He really uses the holes in the Cleveland area. Sixers stay close, lagging behind, 82-79, just under seven minutes left.
- Sixers in the penalty spot with 6:37 left.
- And now Tibul takes his fifth foul in four minutes. Tough whistle for the Sixers tonight.
- Another Shake three and Sixers lose one, 89-88. We should probably stick to playing it over Korkmaz.
- Great game here at the end of the fourth. Harden scored a three-pointer with a step back and was fouled by rookie Evan Mobley. After an examination, Mobley was called to Flagrant one foul for not allowing Harden to land.
Harden completed the free throw, and Georges Niang managed to give the Sixers the first lead of the evening at 94-93 with less than two minutes to go. After stopping, Niang buried a three-pointer from Harden’s pass to give the Sixers a 97-93 lead. The crowd was absolutely wild, with many on their feet. Atmosphere as a playoff.
- A little careless near the quarter, but the Sixers entered the fourth loss with only two at 99-97. The third quarter was Tyrese Maxey’s show. He had 14 points.
Fourth quarter
- Niang scored three more to bring back the Sixers, 100-99. What started as slop has become a hell of a game.
- Harden is so methodical. He plays at his own pace with zero tide to his game. He has up to 20 points and 10 assists. He anchors the composition mainly from the bench from the end of the third.
- Sorry about my language, but damn it, Tyris Maxi. He feels good. After nailing a triple from another penny from Harden, Maxey used the patented triple to step back to knock down another. Harden then picked up Garland’s pocket and punched Maxey. Maxey’s personal series with 8-0 leads Sixers with 112-106 with the remaining 5:52.
- Like that night, having a Harden is as important for moments like this. It’s almost like a four-minute violation in football. He just slows everything down, puts the Sixers where they need to be, and the team as a whole has good possession in attack.
- Garland was trying a hell of a lot to keep things interesting. The Guardian of the Stars had a great night with 26 points and 18 assists. But Embid and Harden were very good in this area.
- Embiid “only” scored 22 points and it didn’t matter. This has happened so rarely this season. Maxi was brilliant with 33 points and five assists. Harden was also great with 25 points and 11 assists. Also great efforts on the bench from Niang (17 points) and Milton (11 points). Hell of a victory.
