French video game giant Ubisoft is cutting 84 jobs in Quebec, the company confirmed Newspaper late Tuesday afternoon.
Montreal, Quebec, Saguenay and Sherbrooke as well as their VFX studio in Quebec are affected.
“Today we announced the reorganization of the administrative services of our Canadian studios, the reduction of the workforce of Hybride (our Montreal-based VFX studio) and our global IT team, affecting a total of 124 positions,” the company stated.
Rationalization imposed
A total of 98 are affected in Canada, including 84 in Quebec.
Ubisoft felt the need to “streamline its operations” and “improve its efficiency.”
“These decisions were not made lightly and we fully support our colleagues who will be leaving Ubisoft during this transition,” the company assured.
“All affected Canadian employees will benefit from support as part of this change, including in the form of severance packages, benefits expansion where applicable, and career support to assist them in their transition,” Ubisoft said.
Two years ago, Le Journal reported that Ubisoft had been eligible for more than $1.1 billion in tax credits and subsidies in the country since 2005.
Almost 90% of this amount was paid by the Quebec government.
