UdeM has set to work to clear the emergency room of the Cité de la Santé

These premises are notably equipped with a simulation center equipped with mannequins that bear a surprising resemblance to humans.

However, starting Monday, a few hundred real patients will march there every week to be treated by specialist nurse practitioners (IPS) and clinical nurses under the watchful eye of nursing students.

As explained by Élaine Cardinal, Director of Nursing at CISSS de Laval, two SNPs with one nurse will attend to patients who are either referred from the Emergency Department of Cité de la Santé Hospital, […] either by a professional from the First-Line Access Point (GAP) or by our home care teams.

It must be said that the emergency department of the hospital in Laval receives 800 to 900 patients whose medical condition is classified as minor or non-urgent (P4, P5) every week and who stay there for 6 hours at 7am. in the waiting room.

There is also great demand at the First-Line-Access-Counter (GAP) to make an appointment with a nurse.

improve access to care

The main goal is to see patients elsewhere than in the emergency room and improve the accessibility of care, she says.

Ms. Guindon, Head of Advanced Practice and Skills Development at CISSS de Laval, says she wants to push the role of NPs and clinicians to the maximum of their practice.

For Sylvie Dubois, Dean of the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Montreal, it is a university hospital school where ICU nurses and clinical nurses learn to work in tandem.

This is an inspiring collaboration between CISSS and the University, says University of Montreal Rector Daniel Jutras.

The site is initially open by appointment on Mondays and Wednesdays from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. 300 time slots per week are planned.

Attract more nurses

During our visit, nursing student Annabelle Lemay was delighted with the opening of this clinic school.

A plus is that it’s right on our campus, where we can go to our lectures and then come to an internship in the evening, she emphasizes.

Health Minister Christian Dubé and University Minister Pascale Déry see this as an additional opportunity to attract more young people to a shortage of jobs.

“If you offer such an exciting training environment as here, people will definitely come. »

Mr. Dubé draws a parallel with new hospitals like the CHUM, the MUHC and even Sainte-Justine where it is easy to attract nurses to work there. […] because the environment is exceptional.

There are currently approximately 1,100 specialty nursing practitioners in Quebec out of a total nursing workforce of 76,000.

In 2017, the Liberal government of Philippe Couillard launched a program to train from 2000 to 2025.

According to the Department of Health and Higher Education, the university network has admitted more than 1,200 students to the IPS program over the past five years, and the Quebec government has awarded them nearly $60 million in scholarships.

Humble beginnings in south Montreal

The Laval IPS clinic is the fourth to open its doors in the Montreal area since Minister Dubé announced the establishment of an emergency response unit in early November.

A first clinic opened its doors two weeks ago in east Montreal with 300 timeslots per week.

Two other clinics in south-central Montreal will have more modest beginnings, with around 100 weekly slots.
