UFC’s Jorge Masvidal arrested on charges of assaulting Covington

Jorge Masvidal is arrested.

Less than 48 hours after an alleged altercation with UFC contender Colby Covington, Masvidal was picked up by Miami-Dade County police on Wednesday evening and detained at 10:27 p.m. local time, less than 48 hours later, according to online records. The news of Masvidal’s arrest was first reported by Local News WPLG 10.

Masvidal, 37, faces two charges: one count of aggravated battery resulting in grievous bodily harm and one count of criminal mischief. He is currently being held at the Turner Gilford Knight Correctional Center in Miami on $15,000 bail.

A video released by the WPLG shows Masvidal briefly running to the police station in handcuffs.

In a police report obtained Tuesday by MMA Junkie, the MBPD confirmed it had responded to an incident labeled as a felony outside of Papi Steak. The report does not state that charges were filed, but lists Masvidal as the only suspect.

Covington’s name was not mentioned in the police report. An MBPD information officer told MMA Junkie that the alleged suspect in this incident used “Marci’s Law” to protect his information. However, Masvidal identified Covington on Twitter. This was before TMZ Sports released a cell phone video of Covington talking to police, as well as footage of Masvidal being restrained from Covington.

A police report says officers responded to a battery call outside a restaurant at 10:54 p.m. local time. There they met a “victim” who had broken a tooth and suffered an abrasion on his wrist, claiming that Masvidal ran up to his left and punched him twice in the face (once in the mouth and once in the left eye) as he left the restaurant. Masvidal allegedly said, “You shouldn’t have talked about my kids.” The victim described a group of “three or four other unidentified men aggressively approaching him. Police said that at this point, the victim “pushed away one of the unknowns, separated from the attackers and ran back to the Papi Steak restaurant, where she contacted the police.”

Masvidal attended a Nevada Athletic Commission (NAC) call less than 10 hours before his arrest on Wednesday, where he said he had not been charged. He also described the incident as a “mutual” event, but chose not to elaborate as his lawyer was not present.

The alleged incident comes 16 days after Covington fought Masvidal for five rounds on his way to winning a unanimous decision in the UFC 272 headliner. enemies as both rose to the status of contenders for the welterweight title.

After that, Covington, who now trains at the MMA Masters, declared himself “King of Miami”, to which Masvidal objected. Both men said they would fight outside the octagon again if they faced each other in public.
