“It’s an extraordinary achievement to give birth to twins,” doctor Edward Tamale Sali, who monitored her pregnancy and delivery, told AFP on behalf of a 70-year-old mother.

The mother, Safina Namukwaya, described the birth of the twins, a boy and a girl, as a “miracle” on Wednesday.

The mother and babies are in good health and continue to be monitored at a facility in the capital Kampala, continued Edward Tamale Sali. Safina Namukwaya normally lives in rural Masaka, about 120 kilometers west of the capital.

The septuagenarian gave birth to a daughter just three years ago after being described as a “cursed woman” for failing to have children before.

She had no children with her first husband, who died in 1992. However, much to her dismay, Ms Namukwaya’s current partner, whom she met in 1996, did not give birth.

“Maybe he’s not happy that I gave birth to twins… fearing the responsibility that comes with it,” she said.
