The UK Supreme Court on June 9 dismissed the defense of Julian Assange’s appeal against his extradition to the United States, where he is accused of conspiracy.
In a three-page ruling, Judge Jonathan Swift questioned the defense’s arguments against the judgment signed into law by then-British Home Secretary Priti Patel in June 2022.
The journalist and founder of WikiLeaks was arrested in London in 2019 after having fugitive status at the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years.
Following the verdict, his wife Stella Assange said via her Twitter account that a new appeal would be filed next Tuesday.
The defense has five business days to file a 20-page appeal before a two-judge panel that will call a public hearing.
After recourse to this instance, no further appeals at national level are possible, but the case could be reviewed by the European Court of Human Rights.
If his extradition is not stopped, Assange faces up to 178 years in prison in the United States.
