Who will succeed Boris Johnson at 10 Downing Street? On Friday 8th July, former UK Treasury Secretary Rishi Sunak announced his candidacy to replace the resigning Prime Minister at the head of the Conservative Party and thus the head of government in the UK.
“I’m running to be the next leader of the Conservative Party and your Prime Minister. Let’s restore confidence, rebuild the economy and bring the country together,” he said on Twitter.

At 42, Rishi Sunak is considered one of the favorites to replace Boris Johnson across the Channel. The former Treasury Secretary was among the first to announce his resignation alongside fellow health officer Sajid David on Tuesday. These departures came in the wake of repeated scandals shortly after Boris Johnson publicly apologized for the appointment of Chris Pincher to his government in February. The latter resigned last week after being accused of touching two men.
The resignations of Sajid David and Rishi Sunak sparked a series of departures of senior executives, culminating in Boris Johnson’s resignation on Thursday.
