The London Metropolitan Police said that the investigation would continue and that further so-called fixed-term deposit notices could be issued at a later date.
The announcement is the first official confirmation that events at Downing Street and Whitehall break laws made by Johnson’s government – and it comes four months after the Prime Minister refused to hold parties and insisted that all guidelines have been followed.
The so-called “Partygate” scandal, which surfaced in late 2021, unleashed the most serious threat to Johnson’s premiership yet. His early denials of any wrongdoing — coupled with later revelation that he himself had attended several parties that officials were investigating — sparked calls for his resignation from across the political spectrum.
Tuesday’s police statement did not name the individuals facing the fines or which of the events under investigation were found to have broken the rules. CNN has reached out to Downing Street.
Officials were investigating at least 12 events, some of which saw Johnson present. The Metropolitan Police previously announced they had been handed more than 300 photos and 500 pages of information for verification.
