Official green light from the UK government for the introduction of a much-anticipated electronic visa system called ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization), similar to the American Esta model intended for tourists visiting the United States. The mechanism, which involves filling out an online form and paying a modest sum of money, should make entry for casual travelers “more efficient and safer”, according to Robert Jenrick, deputy home secretary and responsible for the delicate wallet of immigration within the Tory structure of Rishi Sunak.
UK visa available from late 2024
For now, it will apply to those arriving in the UK from some London-allied Gulf countries, starting in October and starting with Qatar. However, from the end of 2024 – after a long period of expectation – it should also come into force for occasional trips and short stays by tourists and holidaymakers from EU countries (including Italy): no longer automatically covered by the freedom of movement within the United Kingdom under post-Brexit restrictions .
how to get it
The application can mostly be made via a phone app, with immediate release of the visa, unless there are justified refusals. “Strengthening our borders remains one of the Conservative government’s priorities,” Jenrick stressed, two days after the executive tabled a controversial and draconian (on paper, at least) crackdown on legislation against landing illegal migrants in Westminster Parliament. “ETA – added the deputy minister – will facilitate the travel of legitimate visitors, and the travelers” from the Arab countries “of the Gulf Cooperation Council will be the first to benefit”.
