Ukraine and Corona most searched

What Austrians are most worried about in a year now reflects very well on search engines. Therefore, Google annually evaluates the registrations of its users and organizes them into lists. In all categories, Austria’s “most popular terms” were ranked, i.e. the search terms that increased the most compared to the previous year. The technology group does not reveal how often individual words were searched. A review of this year through Google’s red-white-red glasses.

AUSTRIA. While last year the pandemic was still Google’s search trend signal, this year Ukraine has made it to the top of Austria’s most searched terms. But the search term “Corona vaccination near me” follows immediately after. “Nobody wants to hear this anymore, but Corona still has us under its spell,” Wolfgang Fasching-Kapfenberger, a spokesman for Google Austria, said at the presentation of the results on Tuesday. Sporting events such as the World Cup or the Olympics ranked third and fourth. It is therefore not surprising that Dominic Thiem in fifth place is again a term in the sporting context.

Dominic Thiem is also “Austria’s most interested athlete”, said Fasching-Kapfenberger. The tennis star from Lower Austria therefore leads the ranking of the most sought after Austrians. Snowboarder Anna Gasser took second place, actress Valerie Huber took third place. People from political circles came in fourth (Gerald Grosz), five (Tassilo Wallentin) and seventh (Johannes Rauch).

Presidential election campaign in the interest

The subject of the campaign for the federal presidential election was not only included in the ranking of the most searched Austrians, but also reached sixth place in the top ten terms of the year and was also number one in the news topics. Also in this category, Austrians were very interested in the topic of cold progression, ambrosia or referendum.

“Not surprisingly, war in Ukraine will feature heavily in trending search terms in 2022. The individual search terms show how great the interest was, because the search was not just for the aggressor, but also for individual Ukrainian cities like Mariupol” , explains the spokesperson.

The fastest growing search queries on climate, environment and energy were: climate change, climate bonus and fuel price calculator.

Better to ask Google than real people

As always, Google also lists the top ten questions on how…? “Many would rather ask Google a question than ask their friends or family to avoid bias,” says Fasching-Kapfenberger. “How long is a PCR test valid?” interested most Austrians, followed by “How old is Putin?”. Austrians were also interested in the question: “How long does it take to recover?”, “How deep is the ocean?” and “What is the validity of the green passport?”.

In what…? Questions were asked about “Corona positive – what to do?” or what NATO is looking for. Apparently, there were often problems with the weather bonus. In third place is: “What to do – don’t get the weather bonus?” What is an oligarch also occupied many users.

Google has compiled a list of the best of all W-questions. Above all, the question that is often asked in the morning: “Why am I so tired?”. Many users also wanted to know where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is and why they don’t get Corona. “Why does my dog keep licking me?” also entered the ranking. as well as the question “Why were false eyelashes invented?”
