Ukraine claims it bombed Russian positions on Snake Island

The Ukrainian army said it had bombed Russian positions on Snake Island in the Black Sea, which has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance since the Russian invasion began on February 24.

“Our armed forces bombed enemy positions on Snake Island,” the Southern Command of the Ukrainian Army said on Facebook last Tuesday (26).

The Ukrainian army said the bombing hit a “checkpoint” and destroyed an antiaircraft system, and it was trying to identify “the victims” of Russian forces.

Russia, which took control of Serpents Island on the first day of the military offensive, has not yet confirmed that it was the target of the bombing there.

Tiny Snake Island has become a symbol of the Ukrainian resistance after a group of Ukrainian border guards rejected a summons to surrender launched by the Russian ship Moskva and sent a radio message cursing the Russian military that went viral on social media.

Shortly thereafter, the Moskva River bombarded the island, and the Russian military that landed on it captured members of the Ukrainian army, who, according to Ukrainian authorities, were later exchanged for Russian prisoners.

The Moskva, the main ship of Russia’s Black Sea fleet, sank in midApril after being hit by two Ukrainian missiles. Russia has admitted one sailor has died and 27 are missing but claims the ship sank due to a fire caused by an explosion on board.
