Ukraine has recaptured a village in the southern Zaporizhia region — the second area it has claimed since its counteroffensive began last week.

A Russian-installed official on Sunday confirmed Ukraine’s win in the village of Piatykhatky, telling Telegram that its forces were entrenched there while coming under fire from Russian artillery.

“The enemy’s ‘wave’ offensives showed results, despite huge losses,” official Vladimir Rogov told the news app Telegram.

According to Rogov, fierce fighting continued in the region, although there was no official information on the actions from Ukraine.

If confirmed, it would be Ukraine’s first village win in nearly a week as the country ramps up its offensive toward Crimea.

While Ukraine’s counter-offensive is underway, both sides are suffering high military casualties, with Russia suffering its highest number since the Battle of Bakhmut in March, according to British military officials.

In an update from British intelligence on Sunday, officials said the fiercest fighting had been concentrated in the southeastern Zaporizhia province, around Bakhmut and west towards Ukraine’s Donetsk province.

What you should know about this phase of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

1. Kherson

The Kherson region, southwest of Zaporizhia, was tipped as a possible counteroffensive candidate from which the Kiev army could launch an attack that would cut through Russian-held territory and cut off Crimea. But the destruction of the Novaya Khakovka Dam this week could pose a major obstacle. Kiev has accused Moscow of deliberately blowing up the dam and triggering catastrophic flooding to thwart its counteroffensive.

2. Zaporizhia

Russian forces said they repelled four separate Ukrainian attacks in Zaporizhia, where Kiev’s forces were attempting to break through enemy front lines — an attempt that Moscow says resulted in heavy casualties, including 30 tanks destroyed and up to 350 casualties. Ukraine’s military said in an update the enemy has remained “on the defensive”, launching airstrikes and shelling towns and villages with artillery shells.

3. Tokmak

Heavy fighting has been reported in the town of Tokmak, a key Russian logistics center in south-eastern Ukraine that lies on the route to the larger occupied town of Melitopol on the Sea of Azov, considered a key target for Kiev. According to unconfirmed reports, German Leopold 2 tanks and US-supplied Bradleys were involved in the battle on the Ukrainian side.

4. Avdiivka

The devastated city of Avdiivka, just outside Russian-controlled Donetsk to the east, has withstood 15 months of bombardment and countless attempts by Russian troops to encircle it. The Ukrainian Army said in its latest update that Moscow forces’ recent attempt to advance near two settlements outside of Avdiivka was thwarted when they bombarded the area with artillery fire.

5. Bachmut

Kiev said its troops had advanced about a mile on the flanks of the devastated town of Bakhmut in eastern Ukraine’s Donetsk region, which was captured in May after months of fighting by mercenaries from Russia’s Wagner Group and handed over to regular forces. Moscow claimed to have repelled the attack, and senior US officials said Ukrainian troops in the east suffered “significant” casualties in soldiers and equipment.

6. Belgorod

Pro-Ukrainian rebels have raided the Russian city of Belgorod on the border with Ukraine, while Kiev’s forces continued to bomb the city and sow chaos. Thousands of residents were evacuated from the region, causing an uproar in the Kremlin. Partisans who took part in the Belgorod campaign said that after the liberation of Crimea they would march to Moscow.

Ukraine’s military said Sunday that Russia had carried out 43 airstrikes, four rocket attacks and 51 multiple rocket launcher attacks in the past 24 hours.

As Russia focuses its attacks on Bakhmut, Avdiivka, Marinka and Lyman in Donetsk province, Donetsk region governor Pavlo Kyrylenko said two civilians were killed and three others injured over the past day.

Russian forces have also carried out airstrikes in other regions in the south and east of the country, killing another civilian in Kherson.

Russia and Ukraine have painted very different pictures of the war in recent weeks, with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin insisting last week that Ukraine had “no chance” of succeeding in the counteroffensive.

Last week, Ukraine said it had regained control of about 38 square miles of territory and recaptured villages in the Donetsk region in just over a week.

Last Monday, Ukraine announced that it had recaptured Lobkove, a village next to Piatykhatky in the Zaporizhia region.
