MADRID, April 29 (EUROPA-PRESSE) –
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres promised this Friday that the UN would “redouble its efforts” to save lives and reduce the suffering of the people of Ukraine after his visit to the capital Kyiv to meet with to meet the President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“In this war, in all wars, civilians always pay the ultimate price,” Guterres said on his Twitter account, where he said he was “moved” by the “resilence and courage” of Ukrainians. “My message to them is simple: we will not give up,” he concluded.
During his visit to Kyiv, Guterres acknowledged that the UN Security Council “did not do everything in its power” to prevent the conflict.
The UN Secretary-General traveled to the Ukrainian capital after a visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to Moscow. The Ukrainian president openly criticized Russia for being the first leg of Guterres’ trip amid the armed conflict.
The UN Secretary-General called on Russia to “end the war as soon as possible” and to promote “effective dialogue” to achieve a “peaceful resolution to the conflict in Ukraine sparked by Putin’s February 24 invasion order .
