Ukraine, new reshuffle in the military command: what is happening?

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fired Dmytro Hereha as commander of Ukraine's Support Forces and replaced him with Oleksandr Yakovets. The appointment is part of Zelensky's reshuffle of the Ukrainian military command, which included the dismissal of Ukraine's top military commander Valery Zaluzhny.

The Support Forces of Ukraine are one of the country's main military formations and are responsible for operational support of troops. These include technical support, electronic warfare, chemical and biological protection, and topographic and hydrometeorological support.

Zelensky announced several high-level military appointments in early February, including commanders of the Ground Forces, Territorial Defense Forces, Combined Forces and Air Forces.

Three days ago the change of brigade commanders: “Actions by some threaten the lives of soldiers”

Just three days ago, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrsky said he had been forced to make “personnel decisions” regarding some brigade commanders on the Eastern Front whose actions “endangered the life and health” of his soldiers. “I continue to work on the Eastern Front. Within three days it became completely clear why … some brigades manage to repel enemy attacks and hold their positions, while others fail to do so,” Syrsky said on Telegram.

“It depends primarily on the brigade commander, on his training, on his experience and on his ability to make appropriate and balanced decisions,” he emphasized. Syrsky replaced Valerii Zaluzhny as commander-in-chief on February 8.

Ukraine has faced growing challenges on the battlefield in recent months as U.S. military aid remains blocked while Russia increases pressure on the front lines.
