MADRID, January 13 (EUROPA PRESS) –
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán this Friday accused the US authorities of “profiting” from the war in Ukraine and indicated that he “cannot lift the sanctions imposed on Russia on his own”.
“Only France and Germany can do that,” he asserted, referring to the European Union’s measures against Moscow since the beginning of the Russian invasion, against which he repeatedly resisted.
He emphasized that he could only “reduce the damage that the sanctions are doing to his country,” as he indicated to Kossuth radio station.
“Only the Germans and French can change the EU’s position on sanctions, and Hungary’s political resources are not enough for that. All I can do is contain the damage,” he insisted, before influencing his “negative” view of those sanctions.
In this sense, he stressed that at some point “someone in the EU will say that we screwed everything up and ask us to stop it”. “The problems caused by the sanctions will only increase,” he said. “If we withdraw them, energy prices will fall immediately and inflation with them,” he added.
He also reiterated his position that “Europe is the real loser in this conflict, while the United States benefits”. “From an economic point of view, Europe is the main loser in Ukraine,” he said.
