Ukraine: Russia intensifies attacks on Kiev news

According to Ukraine, Russia attacked Kiev with drones for the second night in a row, again intensifying bombings against the Ukrainian capital after a break of several weeks. Kiev was attacked in waves and from different directions, the head of Kiev’s military administration, Serhiy Popko, wrote in Telegram today.

The Ukrainian army apparently managed to repel Russian forces several kilometers along the Russian-controlled eastern bank of the Dnipro River. Preliminary estimates varied “between three and eight kilometers”, depending on the nature and geography of the bank, army spokeswoman Natalia Gumenyuk told Ukrainian television.

“The enemy continues its artillery bombardment on the right bank,” Gumenyuk explained. Ukraine estimates the number of Russian troops in the area at “several tens of thousands.” “We still have a lot of work to do,” emphasized the spokeswoman. If reports of the Ukrainian advance are confirmed, it would be Ukraine’s biggest success against Russian forces in several months.

Alarm over airstrikes in Kyiv

There have been several alarms about air strikes in Kiev. According to initial reports, there were no casualties or damage to critical infrastructure, Popko said. The Ukrainian Air Force said it destroyed 15 of 20 Iranian-made Shahed Kamikaze drones over the Kiev, Poltava and Cherkasy regions.

Yesterday, Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy said that following a wave of Russian attacks, there were power outages in more than 400 locations across the country. Electrical networks were damaged, especially in the south, around the port city of Odessa, and in the southeast, in the Zaporizhia region.

According to the Air Force, the attacks lasted from the night until the early hours of the morning. Russia fired 38 Shahed drones, 29 of which were shot down.
