08:17 – Anne Applebaum: We have to imagine a Ukrainian victory, that will be the end of Putin
In September, following Ukraine’s counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region, Anne Applebaum — a writer and journalist who has also been involved in important talks with historians and intellectuals that President Joe Biden wanted in the past — wrote in the Atlantic: Ukrainians could make this war to win. Are we in the West really prepared for a Ukrainian victory? Do we know what other changes it could bring?. Back in March, Applebaum said it was necessary to envision the possibility of victory, defined in more limited terms (Ukraine remains a sovereign democracy with the right to choose its own leaders and treaties). As Zelenskyi clarified in Washington, victory for Kyiv now means not only retaking territories, but also obtaining economic reparations and justice for war crimes. A definition that Applebaum believes is justified, albeit extraordinarily ambitious. It’s hard to imagine how Russia can accept that if Putin stays in power. We have to reckon with the fact that a Ukrainian victory, and certainly a victory as Ukraine understands it, will also bring the end of the Putin regime, Applebaum said (here the complete interview).
05:23 – Here’s what the new US military aid package contains
The new package of US military aid to Ukraine includes, among other things, 50 Bradley armored fighting vehicles armed with 500 TOW anti-tank missiles and 250,000 rounds of 25mm ammunition. The pack also includes 100 M113 APCs, 55 anti-mine vehicles, 138 HMMWV vehicles, 18 M109 self-propelled artillery pieces and 36 105mm towed howitzers. In addition, training for the use of Patriot missiles will begin soon, which will take several months.
05:21 – Boris Bondarev, political asylum in Switzerland for Putin’s enemy diplomats
(by Claudio Del Frate) Boris Bondarev, the Russian diplomat who resigned in May over the invasion of Ukraine, has been granted political asylum in Switzerland. The former Moscow representative at the UN headquarters in Geneva and armaments expert still lives in the Swiss city and told the Moscow Times website that he is looking for work. Now I fight on Twitter and I’m with my cats, she says.
Boris Bondarev, 41, was one of the very first to express his dissent towards his country of origin after the war broke out. I am ashamed of Putin, he declared on May 22, making it clear that he opposes aggression in Ukraine. It seemed to be the beginning of a progressive crumbling of the ruling-class consensus towards the tsar (a few days earlier former Deputy Prime Minister Anatoly Chubais had slammed the door) and instead there were very few Russian grand commissars left to protest in the Kremlin from then on.

05:20 – Russian hacking of US nuclear labs in August 2022
A group of Russian hackers known as “Cold River” attacked three nuclear research labs in the United States last summer. Portal only reports it on its website. The attack took place between August and September, just as Russian President Vladimir Putin was threatening to use nuclear weapons to defend his territory. The US labs targeted by Cold River, which have launched multiple cyberattacks against Kyiv since the start of the war in Ukraine, are Brookhaven, Argonne and Lawrence Livermore.
5:19 am – EU: Withdrawal of Russian troops the only option for peace
The truce declared unilaterally by Russian President Vladimir Putin does not change the fact that Russia is illegally occupying parts of Ukrainian territory. The withdrawal of Russian troops and military equipment from all of Ukraine’s territory within its internationally recognized borders is the only serious option for restoring peace and security. This was stated by the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, in a telephone conversation today with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba. In the absence of such concrete action, a unilateral ceasefire looks like an attempt by Russia to buy time to resupply and reorganize its troops or restore its shattered international reputation, Borrell added, according to EU External Action Service reports.
05:19 – Putin’s Christmas alone in the Kremlin
Russian President Vladimir Putin attended the Orthodox Christmas celebration at the Kremlin’s Cathedral of the Annunciation in Moscow. And he did it – as can be seen in a video – all by himself.
In recent years, the TASS news agency recalls, he usually attended celebrations in churches in other regions of the Federation, but last year he approached him by going to the church near his home outside the city went to Novo -Ogaryovo, which is definitely in the Moscow region.
05:11 – Ukraine, which means the joint deliveries from Berlin and Washington
THE MILITARY POINT (by Andrea Marinelli and Guido Olimpio) – Wagner’s Russian mercenaries are not only continuing their bloody attack on Bakhmut for reasons of war. According to the United States, there is one goal that should not be underestimated: control of some salt and chalk mines. A quest for profits, similar to that in some African states, where Evgeny Prigozhin’s militia had its baptism of fire.
The ambitions
Washington’s accusation may have a basis. The company deals with security, but also with a penetration tool used by the Kremlin to protect deals, investments and resource exploitation. And many parts of occupied Ukraine are important in this regard. At the same time, the US version represents the Wagnerians as a special arm of the Kremlin, a Russian version of the Iranian Pasdarans. The Guardians of the Revolution are not only a powerful force, but also have ties to business through their representatives.
