In the war between Ukraine and Russia, “heavy fighting continued in the first half of September 2023 around the islands of the Lower Dnipro in Kherson Oblast, which currently mark the front line. Both sides launched raids with teams in small boats against the islands and opposite banks of the rivers. British intelligence writes it down to X.
“There is a realistic possibility that Russian operations in the region have increased,” adds the Ministry of Defense in London, “since the sector came under the responsibility of the newly created 40th Army Corps. The number of armed forces involved is relatively small compared to others.” However, both sides see the area as strategically important. It also provides an opportunity to distract enemy units from the intense fighting in the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk regions.
