Medvedev says the West will try to interfere in the Russian elections

Former Russian President and current Vice-President of the country’s Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, has said he believes the West will try to interfere in Russia’s presidential elections, scheduled for 2024, in which Vladimir Putin wants to run again.

In an interview for Russian media collected by the Interfax agency, he criticized that Western countries “accuse us of meddling, but have openly done so since the collapse of the Soviet Union.” In his opinion, this intervention aims to “destabilize the political situation and split the country into parts [pequeños Estados o repúblicas]negotiate with each of these parties, denuclearize and demilitarize them, and then come and offer their services.”

He has also assured that peace with Ukraine is a long way off, partly due to Kiev and Washington’s rejection of the peace plan proposed by China during the visit of its President Xi Jingping to Moscow: “To implement a plan, one only needs to study, not just here, but at least in Washington and Kiev, and that’s not the case now.”

For Medvedev it is currently impossible to reach an agreement with the West in the framework of the war in Ukraine, he assures that “in certain situations it makes no sense to agree, and it is necessary to ignore it, and in some cases to make decisions like those adopted on February 24 last year” regarding the start of Russia’s “major operation” in Ukraine.

He went even further and said: “Ukraine in general is a part of Russia, let’s be honest. But for geopolitical and historical reasons, we have long reconciled ourselves to these fictitious borders.”

Regarding the arrest warrant against Putin, which was issued last week by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for the deportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, Medvedev made it clear that an arrest would be an act of war against Russia. “Let’s imagine it, although it is clear that it is a situation that will never happen. The current head of a nuclear state arrives on the territory of, say, Germany and is arrested. What is that? A declaration of war on the Russian Federation! Then all of our media would go to the Bundestag, the Chancellery, etc.,” he said with contempt for the court. (European press)
