On Saturday, seven escape corridors were created for the beleaguered civilian population in cities in distress in Ukraine.
From the southern city of Mariupol, which has been particularly hard hit by the fighting, a path for private vehicles is expected to head towards the city of Zaporizhia, Deputy Prime Minister Irina Wereshchuk announced in Kiev. From the city of Berdyansk, civilians must be evacuated by bus, but they must also be able to flee by car in the direction of Zaporizhia.

Five corridors led to the city of Bakhmut from troubled areas in the east of the country, Vereshchuk wrote on his Telegram news channel. In addition, the Red Cross tried to get residents out of the city in a convoy. In the afternoon it was still not clear if this was possible.
Estimates: Around 100,000 in the Ukrainian city of Mariupol
Also on Sunday several buses will be used to rescue civilians from Mariupol. As a citizens’ initiative announced on Saturday, ten larger buses are expected to bring about 500 people to Zaporizhia. According to estimates, around 100,000 people are still in the embattled and already heavily damaged city.
