The International Committee of the Red Cross today resumed the mission to evacuate trapped civilians in Mariupol, southern Ukraine, after being forced to interrupt it yesterday. A convoy of 54 Ukrainian buses and vehicles will operate at the scene to evacuate civilians from the besieged city. An estimated 160,000 people are trapped in the city. The International Red Cross stated that the operation was approved by both Kyiv and Moscow. The destination to which the evacuated civilians will be transferred has yet to be clarified.

In total, seven humanitarian corridors have been organized in Ukraine for the evacuation of civilians from besieged cities. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk, stating that the evacuation will also affect the port city of Mariupol using private cars and buses.

In a message published overnight, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that more than three thousand people have already been evacuated from Mariupol. “We also agreed to bring the injured and dead out of the city,” he added, noting that Turkey played a mediating role.

Meanwhile, a convoy of 30 buses has arrived in Zaporizhia in southern Ukraine, home of Europe’s largest nuclear power plant, to evacuate the displaced. The Kiev authorities confirm this. Zaporizhia is the destination of evacuees from the besieged city of Mariupol.
