(Sputnik) Ukrainian Nazi veteran Jaroslav Hunka and his family are hiding amid a scandal in the Canadian parliament, CBC television reported, citing family friend Barb Bonenfant.
“Afraid to show her face,” Bonenfant said. She said she didn’t know that Hunka was an SS man.
On September 22, Hunka, a 98yearold former volunteer with the 14th Grenadier Division of the WaffenSS, a Nazi military unit declared a criminal organization during the 1946 Nuremberg Trials, was invited to the Canadian Parliament by President Anthony Rota and praised as a “hero” who fought against the Russians in World War II. Rota resigned following the backlash that followed the revelation of Hunka’s role in the infamous SS.
The tribute to a Nazi veteran sparked protests in Russia and Poland. Senior officials suggested that Hunka be extradited so that he could be dealt with in court. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov emphasized that Hunka’s crimes had no statute of limitations.
