The first tests began in 2014, but we had to wait until 2023 for the TNT channels to switch to Ultra HD (4K). The first antennas have been deployed in the Paris region and the first two channels capable of broadcasting in UHD will be those of the public service: France 2 and France 3.

A phased deployment with a view to the 2024 Olympic Games

Instead of the good old Full HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels, the viewer can enjoy an Ultra HD resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. The frequency also ranges from 25 to 50 frames per second and we are even entitled to HDR10, provided of course you have a compatible TV. Finally, on the audio side we can count on the Dolby Digital Plus format.

Jacques Donat-Bouillud, head of broadcasting and distribution network development at France Télévisions, also specified this in January. The aim is to reach 70% coverage of the French population by the 2024 Olympics, which start in July.

If certain programs – particularly sporting events – are broadcast in native 4K, France Télévisions will apply upscaling to a lot of content, at least until the end of the decade. To watch the Ultra HD versions of France 2 and France 3, go to channels 52 and 53.
