UN: 100 million to fight hunger

The UN is providing 100 million dollars (91.93 million euros) to fight the worsening of hunger in Yemen and in several African countries threatened by the war in Ukraine. “The effects of the conflict in Ukraine threaten to drive millions of people even closer to famine,” the UN said yesterday.

Of the total, 14 million will go to Somalia, 12 million to Ethiopia, 4 million to Kenya, 20 million to Sudan, 15 million to South Sudan, 15 million to Nigeria and 20 million to Yemen. UN aid organizations must use the money to buy food and other urgently needed goods.

The emergency aid “will save lives”, said UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Martin Griffiths. “Hundreds of thousands of children go to bed hungry every night while their parents worry about how to feed them. A war on the other side of the world makes their prospects even worse,” he warned.
