UN appoints new coordinator for humanitarian affairs in Gaza

The designation is in line with the resolution adopted by the Security Council last week that established this position to facilitate, coordinate, monitor and verify shipments of humanitarian assistance to the enclave.

The Dutch-born representative's task, among other things, is to set up a United Nations mechanism to speed up the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip from states not involved in the conflict.

In carrying out these tasks it is supported by the United Nations Office for Project Services.

According to a press release from the UN chief's office, Kaag will begin work on January 8, 2024.

The envoy has extensive experience in political, humanitarian and development affairs as well as diplomacy, having held positions such as first deputy prime minister and first finance minister of the Dutch government since January 2022.

She was previously the European country's head of trade and development cooperation from October 2017 to May 2021 and foreign minister until September 2021.

The MP was elected leader of the social-liberal party D66 in September 2020 and resigned from this position in August 2023.

He also led his party to victory in the March 2021 elections.

She was the United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon from 2015 to 2017 and the Special Coordinator of the Joint Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the United Nations Mission in Syria from 2013 to 2015.

She also served as Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations Development Program from 2010 to 2013 and as Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Jordan from 2007 to 2010.

His resume also lists several senior positions at the International Organization for Migration and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Middle East.
