United Nations, January 11 (Prensa Latina) United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres today called for investigations into human rights violations and respect for peaceful protests in Peru.
In a statement released by his spokesman Stephan Dujarric, Guterres called on the South American country’s authorities to ensure compliance with the guarantees and to conduct a “diligent, independent, impartial and transparent investigation into complaints of the excessive use of force and human rights violations”.
The demonstrations must be conducted peacefully, respecting life and public and private property, the UN headline stressed.
Shortly before, the United Nations representation in Lima, in another text, lamented the loss of life in connection with the social protests taking place in the country.
The international organization’s statement in Peru also called for compliance with standards and norms regarding the use of weapons against protesters and “facilitating a peaceful and negotiated solution to the crisis”.
He also called on the people and social organizations demonstrating to refrain from acts of violence and to exercise the right to protest peacefully and to respect life and public and private property.
“We call on all parties to give special protection to the rights of people in vulnerable situations and to ensure that the injured receive timely medical attention,” the statement added.
The UN office in Peru estimates the total number of deaths since December 7 at 39 people, of whom at least 17 died this Monday during anti-government protests in the southern Puno city of Juliaca.
Despite the deaths in recent days, this region remains the main focus of rejection of the new government led by Dina Boluarte, replacing now-imprisoned former President Pedro Castillo.
