UN conference on Afghanistan urgently calls for donations

The United Nations wants to ask for US$4.4 billion (about €4 billion) at a donor conference on Thursday for lifesaving aid measures in Afghanistan. According to UN calculations, the need for humanitarian aid for the population this year has tripled compared to 2021. The virtual conference is co-organized with Qatar, Great Britain and Germany.

Representatives of Afghan civil society should also have their say. The conference is overshadowed by recent restrictions imposed on girls and women by the ruling Taliban.

According to the UN, 24.4 million people in Afghanistan depend on humanitarian aid to survive. This corresponds to almost 60% of the population. It is said that half of the country’s population is starving. Relief funds are intended to finance food, healthcare, education and shelter and other protective measures for vulnerable people.

According to the UN, the economy shrank by nearly a third during the international troop withdrawal, the collapse of the internationally supported government and the Taliban takeover in August 2021. Development aid was canceled. Afghan central bank reserves are frozen. No country in the world has yet recognized the Taliban government.
