The UN General Assembly on Friday adopted Jordan’s long-awaited resolution on the Gaza crisis, adopted with 120 votes in favour, 14 against and 45 abstentions.

The text is the first adopted by a United Nations agency after four failed projects in the Security Council since violence broke out on October 7.

The resolution calls for a cessation of hostilities in the Gaza Strip with an immediate and permanent humanitarian ceasefire and rejects the forced relocation of Palestinian civilians.

Meanwhile, the assembly, which has been in emergency session since Thursday, rejected the draft amendment submitted by Canada and co-sponsored by the United States, which was supported by 47 member states, including Egypt, Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Both projects had to receive two thirds of the votes.

The resolution adopted by the Forum calls for respect for international law, including humanitarian and human rights guarantees, particularly for civilians and their property.

At the same time, it calls for “immediate, comprehensive, sustainable, safe and unhindered humanitarian assistance.”

In this sense, it calls for access for the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees, the Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations in the conflict zone.

The text recognizes the need for Israel to revoke the evacuation order from the northern Gaza Strip and rejects any attempt to forcibly relocate the Palestinian population.

Civilians are protected by international humanitarian law and must receive help everywhere, he says.

It therefore calls for the adoption of appropriate measures to ensure the safety and well-being of civilians, in particular children, to ensure their protection and to enable them to move safely.

It also calls for the “immediate and unconditional release of all illegally detained civilians” and calls for their safety, well-being and humane treatment. At the same time, it emphasizes the importance of preventing further destabilization and escalation of violence in the region.

“A just and lasting solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict can only be achieved through peaceful means, based on relevant United Nations standards, in accordance with international law and based on the two-state principle as a solution,” he concludes.
