UN: Israeli attacks on Gaza displace 123,000 people

UNITED NATIONS, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) — More than 123,000 people have been internally displaced in Gaza as a result of ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said today.

Israel’s airstrikes and artillery strikes have hit homes and apartment buildings, destroying four large residential towers in Gaza City, killing six health workers, wounding four others, and damaging seven health facilities and nine ambulances. The office reported and said that damage to water, sanitation and hygiene facilities has affected services for more than 400,000 people in Gaza.

The World Food Program (WFP) has begun distributing food to up to 100,000 displaced people in Gaza who want to reach WFP shelters, said Stephane Dujarric, spokesman for UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Guterres said today that he was deeply disturbed by Israel’s announcement that it would begin a total blockade of the Gaza Strip, into which nothing would be allowed: no electricity, no food and fuel.

Dujarric said the WFP has 13,000 staff in Gaza, mostly national staff, adding that they cannot leave Gaza and are trying to do everything they can to help the population in line with their mandate. End
