UN Mission Highlights Cuba’s Role in Peace in Colombia

In statements to Prensa Latina after the presentation of the report for the period from March 27 to June 26, 2023 on the implementation of the peace agreement before the Security Council, he noted that “Cuba, like very few countries, has done so.” has done a lot for the Colombian peace process.

In this new report presented today, the Secretary-General found the results of the third round of negotiations between the government and the National Liberation Army (ELN) in Cuba very encouraging.

Yet the Antillean country remains on a controversial list of countries that support terrorism, and was included because it respected protocols established in the event that talks between Iván Duque’s government and the guerrillas broke down .

Responding to a question from Prensa Latina on unfair inclusion, António Guterres’ special representative said it was hoped that such a measure would be reviewed.

“We celebrate, and the Secretary General has done so, the important results achieved by the table of talks between the Colombian government and the ELN in this third cycle in Cuba, with the ceasefire and the progress made on the issue of participation by Colombian society. “Creating peace in the process,” he said.

He assured that it gives them “an added flavor because few countries have done what Cuba has done for peace in Colombia, that is clear and widely known.”

“Personally and institutionally, we are very pleased that these results were achieved in the Havana cycle and we hope that this trend will continue in the next cycles that deliver such results,” emphasized the head of the verification mission.

He recalled that a few years ago, when the prospect of a possible review of the question of naming Cuba was raised, the then Secretary-General welcomed it because it was the right decision.

“Today this review has not been carried out and we hope that it will be carried out soon precisely because of the importance of Cuba’s role in the Colombian peace process, in this case with the ELN but also with the former Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia.” People’s Army,” he said.

The official of the multilateral organization reiterated his personal and institutional recognition of Cuba’s role in this peace process.
