UN reaffirms commitment to combat human rights abuses

United Nations, March 24 (Prensa Latina) UN SecretaryGeneral António Guterres today reaffirmed the multilateral organization’s commitment to combating and lifting the veil on gross human rights violations.

Societies must be helped to overcome divisions, be reconciled in peace and unite to support and protect the health, safety, dignity and opportunities of every human being, the headline stressed.

In a message marking International Day for the Right to the Truth about gross human rights abuses and the dignity of victims, Guterres also stressed that truth is a powerful light and the perpetrators of injustice want to hide it.

A light that shows victims a path to peace, justice and reparations and obliges countries to live up to their obligations under international law, he said.

When the light of truth goes out, so the headline, societies sink into a dark world of threats, lies and distrust.

“We must heed the words of Monsignor Oscar Arnulfo Romero, who was assassinated on a day like today 42 years ago for denouncing injustice and inequality in El Salvador,” he said.

Monsignor reminded us that “those who have a voice must speak for those who have no voice,” may her courageous struggle for truth illuminate our own work to promote and protect human rights around the world, he added Portuguese diplomat added.

On March 24, 1980, Monsignor Oscar Romero was assassinated in El Salvador, an assassination that remained unpunished due to the numerous legal obstacles in the prosecution of the spiritual and material perpetrators of the crime.

According to press reports, many Salvadorans regret that the religious who were beatified in May 2015 and canonized on October 14, 2018 have not received justice after a lengthy process.
