Geneva, December 15 (EFE). – The only reason the United Nations cannot provide the people of Gaza with the help they need to survive is the siege that prevents them from fulfilling their mission. Therefore, responsibility lies “on those who created this situation,” a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official said today.
“It is clear that for the past two months and before, Gaza's 2.3 million residents have been completely besieged, hermetically sealed and confined to a small strip of land,” said Health Emergencies Director Mike Ryan.
“At the moment we cannot do our work because we are blocked and prevented from doing so. We have restrictions on who can be in the country and a major problem of access due to insecurity,” he explained in a press conference for the accredited press at the United Nations in Geneva.
Ryan, a doctor who has been directly responding to the world's greatest health emergencies for a quarter of a century, told a journalist who interviewed him how frustrated the people of Gaza were with the little help they were receiving from the United Nations given the enormous need , I should look elsewhere and ask other sources why this is happening.
“You will not find an answer here (at WHO headquarters), but somewhere else, in other countries. “Let’s not turn this situation into propaganda material for those who created the situation we find ourselves in,” he insisted.
In this regard, the organization's director general, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that his organization – which plays the role of the health arm of the United Nations – is doing everything it can to help civilians in Gaza, “but what we send them.” will be “only a fraction of what they should receive.”
He noted that importing 800 trucks a day might be able to address Gazans' most basic needs, “but we're not even close to that yet.”
In recent weeks, at most a hundred trucks of aid have arrived, which is woefully inadequate for a starving population that has no regular access to drinking water, medical care or shelter. EFE
