UN Security Council meeting ends without agreement

The meeting was the second attempt at agreement among the group’s 15 countries on the conflict between Hamas and Israel, but a lack of consensus was already expected

The second meeting of the UN Security Council (United Nations) to discuss the war between Israel and the extremist group Hamas ended this Friday (October 13, 2023) after around two hours No agreement between the 15 countries that make up the group. The lack of consensus was already to be expected. A joint statement may yet be issued and negotiations should continue, according to Itamaraty.

One of the main points being discussed is the push to create a humanitarian corridor in the Gaza Strip to allow civilians to leave and bring in food and water. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) repeatedly called on the Israeli government to give in and allow civilians to leave the country. Brazil is trying to deport around 20 people from the region. The Brazilian head of government addressed the request directly to Israeli President Isaac Herzog in a telephone call on Thursday (October 12).

The meeting was chaired by Brazil, which holds the presidency of the Council in October. Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira defended the formation of a humanitarian corridor in a statement to journalists at the UN headquarters in New York, USA, where the meeting took place.
