UN seeks path to accelerate Agenda 2030

After calling for mobilization on Saturday, this Sunday’s activities will change course and focus on how best to support countries to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The day begins with an opening plenary session that serves as a panel discussion on the urgency of the moment, the importance of what is possible and the need for collective action.

The intent, according to UN Deputy Secretary Amina J. Mohammed, is to demonstrate that transformative progress is possible and is already happening, while generating leadership, support and momentum.

The promise to “leave no one behind,” a tenet of the development agenda, is running into major trouble as, despite some progress, gaps remain in the implementation of the 17 goals such as ending hunger and extreme poverty by 2030, the organization warned in a recent press release.

Since this weekend, UN chief António Guterres has met with a wide range of social actors to urge them to work together on the roadmap.

A few hours before world leaders take part in the opening of the high-level segment of the General Assembly, a fruitful exchange with social actors is taking place at the United Nations headquarters in New York.

Youth groups and women’s organizations, mayors, community activists and business leaders are coming together to increase support for the 2030 Agenda ahead of the SDG Summit.

The event, scheduled for September 18th and 19th, is already considered the central axis of the High Level Week with the aim of putting the world back on the path to a greener, cleaner, safer and fairer future for all .

Furthermore, it will mark the midpoint of the SDGs, between its launch in 2015 and its deadline in 2030.
