United Airlines announced Friday that it would increase baggage fees, following a similar move by American Airlines and Jet Blue earlier this week.

In a statement to Fox News Digital, United Airlines said it is increasing checked baggage fees for customers traveling in North America.

Economy class passengers on United Airlines domestic flights will now pay an additional $5, bringing the cost of their first checked bag to $40.

The fee for a second checked bag also increases to $45 in advance online and $50 at the airport.

The new policy applies to tickets purchased on or after Saturday, February 24, the airline said.

The Chicago-based airlines said they had not increased their baggage fees in four years.

United Chase credit cardholders, MileagePlus Premier members, active military members and customers traveling in premium cabins will still be able to check their bags for free, the airline said.

The news comes as American Airlines, Alaska Air and Jet Blue have recently increased baggage fees.

The world's top 20 airlines generated more than $33 billion in baggage fee revenue last year, according to an annual report from IdeaWorks Co. and CarTrawler.

Baggage fees are seen as a “significant component of ancillary revenue” to help airlines offset other costs, according to the report.

In 2023, the $33 billion represented about 4.1% of airlines' global revenue in 2023. This was also a 15% increase over the $29 billion the companies made in 2022.
