United Cup: an easy win for Leylah Fernandez

Leylah Fernandez easily won Canada's first game in the United Cup group stage 6-2, 6-3 against Daniela Seguel in Australia on Saturday evening.

It only took an hour and 13 minutes for the Canadian to win against the 668th player in the WTA rankings. Fernandez was in control throughout the match, winning 67% of his points on his first serve, which was much better than the 45% his opponent scored.

The Laval resident hasn't lost a game since Oct. 21, when she lost to Katerina Siniakova 7-5, 6-4 in Nanchang, China.

His win against Seguel gave Canada a 1-0 lead over Chile, but the South American country equalized thanks to Nicolas Jarry's 7-5, 6-4 victory over Steven Diez in a game that lasted 1 hour and 53 minutes.

Jarry got into trouble several times, but his efficiency, especially on his first serves, surpassed the Canadian.

Fernandez and Diez will face Seguel and Tomas Barrios Vera in doubles on the night from Saturday to Sunday.
