University of Guatemala Urges to Stop Attempted Coup

In a statement, the university warned that the country is at risk of a collapse of the constitutional order, which entails the loss of all individual and collective rights, it stressed.

He decried the narrative by which the MP seeks to invalidate the electoral process even if the results were verified by the electoral committees with the participation of other entities.

The university center called on the Central Committee to protect the rule of law, ensure social peace and economic and political stability.

He called on key national forces to unite in defense of democracy and the integrity of the electoral process and to demand that the opinions of citizens expressed in the elections be respected.

He called on citizens to remain calm, seek reliable information and express themselves peacefully and responsibly to demand and support the inauguration of the elected duo Bernardo Arévalo and Karin Herrera.

He called on the international community to continue to support the process of transition of power in the country.

Arévalo, after the deputy's contribution last Thursday on elements of the so-called Semilla case, assured that the attack and the absurd and false accusations against his political force were unfounded.

This coup group made very clear the intentions of the illegal actions it carried out last year, he said, saying that “they began with repression to crush the freedom to express themselves and dissent from power.”

The public prosecutor's office presented alleged administrative irregularities in the electoral process, as the protocols were “null and void” since they were originally “not approved by the TSE”, he revealed.

Various local and international organizations immediately condemned the persecution of the MP and agreed that it was a new intervention to prevent the new executive from taking office on January 14, 2024.
