A British university student managed to cancel a parking ticket using the popular artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot ChatGPT, local media reports.

Millie Houlton, 22, has been fined £60 (about $74) for parking in a restricted car park in the English city of York. That’s when she decided to turn to the AI tool to professionally create a complaint email.

“I don’t think I could write it like ChatGPT, I probably wouldn’t have picked it up without himcommented Houlton.

According to the student, the ticket was wrongly issued because she had a parking permit on her street. Based on the young woman’s prompts, the AI tool convincingly drafted a letter to initiate the complaint.

A screenshot of the chatbot’s response shows the letter with just a few fields to fill in, explaining that he left the car behind his house because he was advised not to do it in front due to road works and that he believed to do so legally parked in the space provided.

The young woman presented the completed letter and within days received a response from the ward council advising her that the appeal had been granted.
