“Hamas’ horrific attacks in Israel on October 7 were shocking. The relentless bombardment of Gaza by Israeli forces is shocking. The scale of the destruction is unprecedented and the human tragedy unfolding before our eyes is unbearable,” the Commissioner General of the UN Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, told the Security Council.
“I am very concerned about the possible spread of this conflict beyond Gaza unless the following is applied,” Lazzarini added to the Security Council. “Firstly, international humanitarian law must be strictly adhered to, this is not an option, but an obligation.” Second, we need a safe, unhindered, substantial and continuous flow of humanitarian assistance into and through the Gaza Strip, which is why we need an immediate humanitarian ceasefire. And finally, UNRWA still needs funds.”
