Many people took part in the originally British campaign in 2022 and 2023. You often only realize how naturally you tend to reach for a glass of beer or wine when you have consciously abstained from alcohol for a while.
Because voluntary abstinence is easier in a group and within a certain framework, the Styrian Health Fund prepared the “Dry January” participation campaign for the local population.
Raise awareness instead of bans
For many people, alcohol becomes a lifelong problem. Approximately 370,000 adults in Austria are classified as alcohol dependent (2.5% of women and 7.5% of men). Around a million Austrians drink at a level that puts their health at risk, according to the Styrian Health Fund.
The Styrian Health Fund promotes “Dry January” with advertising reasons like this.
The “Dry January – Styria stays dry” campaign is aimed at all Styrians who consume alcohol regularly, in a spirit of prevention. “We want to encourage voluntary abstinence, which shows participants that without or with less alcohol there are even positive side effects – such as better health or saving your wallet”, explains Bianca Heppner from the “Less Alcohol – More of Life” initiative.
Call for mindfulness and responsibility
State Health Councilor Karlheinz Kornhäusl (ÖVP) supports the campaign: “Health is our most valuable asset and excessive alcohol consumption is a serious threat to our health. Together, we focus on education and promoting awareness about using alcohol in moderation. “Dry January” is an opportunity to take a conscious look at your own health.”
Better health
Studies from the British campaign show the effects that four weeks of abstinence have on the body. Many participants report weight loss, better sleep, fewer skin problems, and generally better health. The long-term effects of a month-long fast are also worth noting. According to a study from the University of Sussex, more than 70 percent of participants still maintain healthier drinking habits six months later than before participating in the campaign month.
“Less alcohol – more life” initiative
An initiative from Styria accompanies “Dry January” on its social media channels. “Participants are supported with expert medical tips, positive motivation and lots of information and tips, including recipes, on how to persevere and the benefits of a month-long alcohol fast”, explains Petra Wielender from “Less Alcohol – More of Life”. “initiative.
