Christmas is just around the corner and the mild weather continues to melt the snow. There’s no chance of a white Christmas in any state capital. According to the current forecast of the Central Institute of Meteorology and Geodynamics (Zamg), it will continue to thaw. The weather will remain changeable and mild. Highs of up to 15 degrees or more are possible on Christmas Eve.

A warm front will pass through Austria on Friday. With this there is an interplay of dense clouds and some sun. Especially in the parts of the country north of the main mountain range of the Alps and in the north and east, it will sometimes rain in the morning. At night, precipitation from the west significantly intensifies. In the southern and southeastern parts of the country, however, it will remain quite dry. The snow line is about 2,000 meters above sea level. Additionally, moderate to strong westerly winds will blow from the east of Upper Austria during the day. Initial temperatures range from minus two to plus seven degrees, maximum daily temperatures from four to 13 degrees, depending on the influence of the wind.

The eastern Alps will remain in a gentle westerly current on Christmas Eve. Throughout Saturday, denser clouds will pass repeatedly. Rain is expected at times, especially on the alpine peaks at a snow level between 1500 and 1800 meters above sea level. In the meantime, however, there are also sunny periods. However, while clouds predominate in the west, the sun appears more and more frequently in the east and southeast in the afternoon. The predominant wind direction is west. The wind is moderate but also strong on the eastern plains and eastern peaks of the Alps. Morning temperatures range from minus one to plus ten degrees. Daily maximum temperatures range from four to 15 degrees, it is hotter with westerly wind in the eastern plains, the lowest values ​​are measured in basins and valleys in the south.

Up to twelve degrees on Christmas Day

On Christmas Day, denser clouds and a few drops of rain can be expected on the north side of the Alps and in the east. Otherwise, it will be slightly cloudy from the start outside the fog zones, so it will also be freezing in the morning in the inner Alps. The sun will also be seen briefly in the northeast on Sunday afternoon before fog tends to rise again over the plain here. The wind will be light to moderate from many directions. The first temperatures are minus four to plus four degrees, the maximum daily temperatures reach five to twelve degrees.

On St. Stephen’s Day, a high and persistent fog hangs over the plains and basins. Outside of foggy areas, the weather will be sunny during the day and persistently very mild at mid-altitudes. Overnight, another cold front with the onset of rain will hit western and northern Austria. The snow line drops to 1600 meters. The generally light wind also picks up and turns west again. The first temperatures range from minus five to four degrees, the maximum daily temperatures range from two to ten degrees.

The remnants of a continuous cold front impact the weather on Tuesday morning and into the morning, mainly in the northern part of the Alps with dense clouds and a few drops of rain. Some snow falls above 1100 meters. During the day most of the clouds dissipate, only in the south are the high fog fields more constant. Initially, a strong west wind will blow, especially in the north and east, which will calm down everywhere at night.
