“To put an end to the drug trade, we would first have to put an end to the police and corrupt politicians, and there are many of them.” This was said by the young Uruguayan drug lord Sebastian Marset in an interview given by the fugitive to the journalist Patricia Martín of the television program Santo y Seña. “There are countries where drug trafficking is part of their daily bread,” Marset added.
With his videos published in hiding on social media, the Uruguayan boss has already embarrassed the police and the governments of various countries. In July, he narrowly escaped capture in Bolivia thanks to a police tip-off. And last month, Uruguay’s interior and foreign ministers were forced to resign over the issue of a legal passport that would allow him to leave Dubai in 2021 after he was stopped in possession of forged documents.
At just 32 years old, Marset is already considered the “King of the Waterway,” the navigable canal that crosses Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina and carries tons of cocaine hidden in containers of grain and soybeans destined for Europe. There are various international arrest warrants against him for drug trafficking, money laundering and the murder of Paraguayan prosecutor Marcelo Pecci. But he denies this last accusation in particular: “I have nothing to do with Pecci’s death,” he told journalist Patricia Martín, who interviewed him at a secret location, presumably in Paraguay.
“You made a big mistake with this accusation, which is why I decided to speak out,” he added.
