American airstrikes killed a total of 19 militants in eastern Syria this week, a Britain-based war observer said Saturday, after an Iranian drone strike killed a US contractor and wounded five American troops.
The retaliatory strikes, carried out on Thursday against targets the Pentagon said were linked to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, killed three Syrian troops, 11 pro-government militia members and five non-Syrian militants, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported.
“Precision airstrikes” by American F-15 fighter jets sparked a rebellion by Iran-backed militants on Friday, who fired 10 rockets that narrowly missed a US base in northeastern Syria – but hit a civilian home and injured two women and two children, according to US Central Command.

The two-day exchange was one of the deadliest between American and Iran-allied forces in years. Since early 2021, when President Joe Biden took office, Iranian proxies have carried out at least 78 drone or missile strikes against US troops in the Middle East.
“The United States is not seeking — I’m not emphasizing — conflict with Iran,” Biden said Friday during a news conference in Ottawa while paying a state visit to Canada. “But be prepared that we will act vigorously to protect our people.”
But Republicans have criticized Biden’s response to the Iran-backed aggression as weak.

“The Biden administration’s continued appeasement doctrine has taken American lives and emboldened our opponents,” Iowa Senator Joni Ernst argued in a tweet.
