In light of the Corona crisis, the United States has announced a global summit to fight the pandemic for May. The summit is due to take place virtually on May 12, the White House announced on Monday. The meeting will be chaired by, among others, the United States and Germany as the current chair of the G-7, and the chair of the G-20 by Indonesia.
“The summit will redouble our collective efforts to end the acute phase of the Covid-19 pandemic and prepare for future health threats,” it said in a statement. “The emergence and spread of new variants such as Omicron has highlighted the need for a strategy to fight Covid-19 globally.”
This is the second global meeting on the corona pandemic that broke out two years ago. US President Joe Biden held a similar summit last September, urging partners to stock up on vaccines and ensure that at least 70% of the world’s population is vaccinated by September this year.
