US announces temporary deployment of 1,500 troops on border with Mexico

According to the US defense chief, the Pentagon is looking at ways to replace activeduty personnel with reserve forces

Border between the United States and Mexico

Sputnik Brazil The Pentagon said today (02) that the Biden administration will temporarily deploy 1,500 additional troops to help protect the United StatesMexico border. The action comes because soon, if COVID19 border restrictions are lifted later, illegal immigration could increase this month.

The 90day deployment of activeduty troops will supplement U.S. border patrol work but will not perform law enforcement functions, Pentagon spokesman Brigadier General Pat Ryder said in a statement quoted by Portal.

The troops will provide ground surveillance, data entry and depot support to relieve border agents and “fill in critical capability gaps,” Ryder said.

The force will be added to an ongoing deployment of around 2,500 National Guard soldiers, according to media reports.

PROCEED TO RECOMMENDATIONS

When asked at a press conference if he could send troops, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the US is a sovereign nation and that Mexico respects its decisions, according to the British agency.

Joe Biden, a Democrat who is running for reelection in 2024, has faced a record number of migrants caught crossing borders illegally since taking office in 2021 and has been heavily criticized by Republicans for breaking the hard line of the reversed former President Donald Trump.
