While Germany has been discussing the delivery of heavy weapons to Ukraine for weeks, the United States is massively stepping up the pace of its military aid in light of the dramatic situation on the ground. There is a “sense of urgency,” said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby. According to Kirby, the Biden administration didn’t just bring parts of the new $800 million military aid to Ukraine “at record speed” that was only promised last Wednesday. It also wants to start training Ukrainian soldiers “in the next few days”, particularly on the 155 mm caliber field howitzer that was delivered for the first time. These artillery pieces are new to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. “We don’t think it will take long to get them up and running,” Kirby said.
