A US Senate committee on Thursday approved a bill aimed at removing China’s status as a “developing country” in some international organizations. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee unanimously voted in favor of China’s “Developing Country Status Termination Bill.”

The bill requires the foreign minister to work to change China’s status as a developing country in these organizations.

Supporters of the proposal argue that this status could give China special privileges in certain organizations and treaties. Approval in committee paves the way for Senate consideration of the measure, but there’s no indication yet of when that might happen.

In March, a similar measure was adopted by MEPs with 415 votes in favor and none against. A desire to take a tougher stance on China is one of the few truly bipartisan sentiments in the US Congress, and lawmakers have introduced dozens of bills dealing with competition with the Chinese government.
